I think a lot of the time we tear ourselves up trying to wear all the hats. Sometimes because we think it'll save us money, or will be done "properly" i.e. as we think it should be done. Maybe we feel guilty at asking for help (ok, so that's me :)) so we don't always choose the right person, or we just grab at the first thing that comes along. But bringing in someone who's qualified - and who fits with us - can take a huge burden away.

I've had the dentist situation like you - to the extent I would travel for an hour each way to visit my trusted dentist when he moved - and also with childminders, when the Sons were young. I think I'm pretty polite and easy to get along with but, my God, what a difference it makes when you connect with someone. Then it feels like you're all on the same team! :)

Comment on Packing Heat 124: Final Ep

Sorry to hear that this was the last episode of Packing Heat. I wish you good luck on your new journey. I've already been unable to resist the call of talking about writing and publishing and I "retired" less than a week ago! I posted an essay on putting free work up at ebooksellers on my LJ account here.
Where am I going to learn about all of the cool software? I've read all of Jordan's books, so hopefully this means I can look forward to more. Good luck with your new hobbies Jordan! Thanks for the great podcasts.

Comment on Packing Heat 115: Don't Cut Your Own Hair

Glad the show is of use to you. I use a freelance editor who has been working with me since 2008. You can find individuals willing to work with you on places like Twitter, message boards and Yahoo Groups. Usually you can tell if you might click with someone because you've interacted a bit, which is better than starting cold.

Comment on Packing Heat 115: Don't Cut Your Own Hair

Thanks again for more wonderful advice!

Do you use a company or a freelance editor? Francois or Norman just wouldn't be right, but I have seen so many Lucien's, which is not a common name and especially for a certain type - Vampire or Werewolf, that I think it must be either a lack of creativity or ignorance of the market on the writer's part.

Comment on Packing Heat 112: Late Additions

When I picked Jacob for the name of my love interest in PsyCop, I looked at the top-10 boys' names of the 20th century and selected the one that seemed to still sound good today. I suppose I can't control that Stephanie Meyer thought so too.

Comment on Packing Heat 112: Late Additions

Another thing to add to the "please don't" list, would be using the same names over and over again. If I read another ebook with a vampire or werewolf named Lucien, I'll lose it. I hate to say it, but Jacob or Jake is used a lot also. There are thousands of names out there, why do writers keep using the same ones?
