My novel Hemovore just came out in ebook. (Paperback will follow in Spring of 2010)

Specializing vs. Generalizing

My friend asked me if I thought she should specialize more in her writing. I was able to think of some pros and cons for both of those tactics:

Specializing Pros
Practicing same theme is like practicing a piece of music
Gather an audience
Develop subtle variations on your themes

Specializing Cons
One-trick pony
Repeat yourself
Flogging a dead horse, wearing out your series' welcome
Your main specialty may go out of style

Generalizing Pros
Kid in a candy store
Visit all your various ideas
Join in anthlologies
Stretch your comfort zone

Generalizing Cons
Audience desertion
Look like a trend chaser
Incohesive body of work

Your Assignment

What would critics say is your "trademark style" — even if you haven't got one yet, what would you like it to be? Mine was "raunchy sex" for a while there, according to critics. I've progressed to "dark humor."
