The Eyes Have It!

Most writers include the eye color of their characters when they're sketching out descriptions for a reader. Why do you suppose that is? Can you name, with any amount of certainty, the eye colors of ten people you know? Of twenty? Would their eye color be one of the first things you think of when that person comes to mind?

Some people do have eyes that striking. But most of us don't. I talk about a self-imposed campaign to weed out mention of eye color in my stories, and read a recent example where I'll need to chop it out.

You are so right. Descriptions of the eyes are usually pretty trite. And no - I can't remember the color of most peoples' eyes. I think I can picture my kid's eyes, my cats' eyes, my first husband's eyes, and the eyes of one guy I used to "date". Smart, funny podcast as usual!
